My first sword.

I got the chance to make my first sword. Its a long, heavy non-stabbing Blue.

Havent weighted it yet, but Im sure its not under the limit. Its 39", which Im sure people will tell me is too long for someone starting out, but I want to start out with what I plan to use. I like range and weight to my real swords, so I expect to like it in my foam swords too.

I deffinetly want to try using Eva foam in the future (this was all blue camp foam) but I'll probably make a few more this way first. Im interested in knowing what you guys think.

My next project will be a shield.

Nice, just make sure to have it check before using it at a event/practice. The rope is nice though.

Also, in the event that if it fails, come looking for me, and I should have a few spare swords you can use. I will be at the event, and more than likely helping out with weapons check(its just what I do) so just ask. I will be sure to have some with me there.

So which building style did you use? What's your core? And I like that grip, what type of rope is that and where did you find it?

Re: My first sword.

The core is two fiberglass driveway markers taped together. As I said before, it's all blue camp foam. I basically took a 2" strip on each of the narrow sides of the core. I then took two 1" strips on each wide side making a box. I the capped the top with blue foam flush with the top of the core. After it dried I the took two long 2" strips and wrapped them along the blade striking sides giving it the rounded top. If there is a name for this type of construction I'm not aware of it.

The rope was actually from a curtain tie my wife and I originally planned to use in our wedding and never did.

I know it's probably hard to tell just looking at pictures, but do you guys see anything the seems like it could cause it to fail a weapons check? What are usually the most common reasons a weapon fails?

I can't see anything just by looking, but I can tell you that the most common reason for things to fail are the following: 1. Feeling core through the striking surface/flats of the blade. 2. Blade/Pommel being detached from the core (seeing how you just made it, I would not expect this) 3. Fails hit test/flex test (once again, not extremely likely seeing as you just made it and it is sounds like you used the same basic technique that everyone uses.) Other than those, just make sure it passes all of the specs for a blue sword.

Edit* After reading what you used for the core and overall length, you might have to worry about flex. I personally try not to go longer than 32 in with the driveway markers.

I'm pretty confident in the flex, I didn't use the cheaper colored markers, I used the thicker white maker with the plastic reflectors on top.(the reflector were cut off ofcourse) they ran about $10 for the pair. I just didn't trust the thinner colored ones lol.

Another thing you might have to worry about would be the weight of it. If it is less than 12oz, then it will not pass. However, if it is around 11.8oz, or something like that, it might be ok. It usually depends on the checker, and if it is really close, then it is ok.
