Where to buy leather?

I'm looking to get into making leather armor, but I'm having trouble finding somewhere to buy the leather needed to get started, I know of a couple places online but when it comes to crafting supplies I prefer to buy in person to make sure I'm getting what I want. Anyone know of somewhere semi-local I can buy from? I live in the Toledo, OH area.

Most of the people I know who make their own armour use www.tandyleatherfactory.com. They have some physical locations, but they aren't exactly close to you (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, or Detroit)but I'm sure you could get a carpool of people to go on an adventure with you.

Do yourself a favor. Make it to at least a few practices before you decide to make armor. It's more important to have weapons and garb first. Armor can wait. It isn't necessary to fight.

Well it's ok, Dagorhir doesnt really play into my desire to make armor. I have been attending Ren and Medieval faires for years now. I have always worn garb and armor that I have made myself or bought, I have worked with cloth, metal, and some leather. So really this is already a hobby of mine. Dagorhir would give another reason to hone my skills as well as be a new way to have fun.

I'd also advise on fighting for a while without armor. That way out of the gate you're not getting used to the extra hit, helps learn d faster I think.

Of course, no way I would have the armor ready that quickly anyway.

Re: Where to buy leather?

I was looking into leather at Tandy Leather's website and I found the armor grade leather. Link below:

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/Leather/9099-317.aspx

Now I understand they come in bends, but I have 2 questions regarding this leather.

1. Approx. how large is a leather bend of this type in say sq. ft.?
2. Other than price, what is the difference between premium and economy?

I've never used these so I'll skip your questions, but what I normally pick up is the 13-15 oz saddle skirting. 12oz is the legal minimum, but by going thicker you make sure you are getting more legal usable area. I know the Westland, MI store regularly runs manager's specials on it which brings the cost down to $90ish.
