Shields?

I have looked through about 8pgs here and all I see is a mojority of people using sled/round shields.

Is there anyone that has a decent kite shield design/tutorial?

Not to heavy but durable that would fit a 5'9" man. My husband is looking for making a shield (first timer) and is leaning towards plywood for a backing.

Any ideas???

Garwyn of Mor'serg uses a kite shield and is also very helpful. If you send him a message, he might be able to help you out.

If you don't have the know-how but you do have the money, try buying some equipment from Edhellen Armoury.

Every single Dagorhir/Belegarth fighter I know will swear that it's the best site for high-value, high-durability full-contact foam fighting equipment.

Re: Shields?

you can always ask Tynan of the OotE (Order of the third eye)

He made my shield as a large tear drop strap and i've had it and used it 3+ years, just had some minor wear and tear mainly from my mistakes in storing it.

and changing it's cover

I'll see about doing a quick workup of my design and posting it tomorrow.

Re: Shields?

Sorry for taking a bit longer, I forgot all about this thread.

Anyhow, this is a pretty simple design. Here's what you'll need:

Design Materials:
A pencil
Measuring Tape
A sturdy thumbtack/safety pin
Some tape
A length of string, at least ~25" or so
A long straight edge
A cardboard sheet as large as your shield

Construction Materials:
Maxyor Foam
Blue Foam
Wooden Core
Carriage Bolts & Nuts (make sure they have a square/hex part right under the domed head)
Washers
Dap

Here's my design:

I'm about 6 feet tall, so this may not be the right size for your husband, but you can adjust for that.

When I'm making something like this I like to prototype the design to make sure it will look and feel right. To that end, you'll want to cut out this design first on the sheet of cardboard. That way you can adjust the sizes as needed without really wasting any material.

1) Lay your cardboard out, and choose where the center of the top circle will be. You'll want to allow at least 13" or 14" around the edges, and make sure that it will be able to run the full 47" in one direction. Mark this spot with your pencil.

2) Measure out 12" from that mark in any direction and make a second mark.

3) Place the safety pin/thumbtack in the middle of the first mark (the center of the circle).

4) Make a loop with the string (secured with tape). The loop should be long enough that when one end is placed over the safety pin/thumbtack and the pencil is pulled taut against the other end the pencil should just reach the second mark you made. As you have probably guessed, this is just a large makeshift compass.

5) Use the string compass you make a 24" diameter circle around the first mark you made. Try to keep the pencil at a constant angle so your circle is nice and pretty.

6) Measure out 32" from the center of the circle and make another mark. This will be the center of your second circle.

7) Adjust your string compass so that it comfortably draws a 3" circle and draw one around the third mark.

8) Take your straight edge and line it up along the two circles so that it is tangent (or close enough) to both. Draw a line along the straight edge, repeat for the other side.

9) Cut out your shield prototype and see how it fits, making adjustments as necessary. Bear in mind that the shield will have about an extra inch around all edges due to edge padding.

10) Repeat steps 1-9, but this time on your shield core. Note: If you're going to layer your core (i.e. glue two or more pieces of wood together), be sure to cut them out so that the wood grains cross each other at a 90 degree angle.

Steps 11 - 17 assume you're going to make a strap shield. If you're making a punch, then I'm not the person to ask.

11) Play around with the core for a while, figure out where his arm feels comfortable and what angle it rests at. Make four marks, about 1.5" out from the edges of his arm. Make one on either side of his balled fist (hand strap) and one on either side of his forearm towards his elbow. Feel free to make adjustments on placement based on what feels right.

12) Drill holes at the marks. You may want to start a little bit smaller than the diameter of your bolts. Make sure they can slide in all the way, but they shouldn't be able to move too easily.

13) Run the bolts through the core and attach the nuts and washers. Mark how far down the bolt the entire assembly reaches. Cut through the bolt a little bit beyond that point (so that you have some wiggle room without leaving a lot of excess to punch through foam or manflesh).

14) Decide whether you want the head of the carriage bolts (the nice flat bit) to face the shield user or the enemy. You want whatever end is inside the foam to be unable to rotate (otherwise you'll be constantly retightening the bolts). To that end, cut out a little bit of the core (in the shape of the nut or the part beneath the bolt head) so that either the heads or bolts sit snugly and won't rotate.

15) If you're comfortable with the bolt placement and how they run through, superglue whatever goes on the foam side in its seat. Give it ample time to set. You may want to tighten the assembly together to make sure it sets tightly.

16) Cut out a rectangle of blue foam that will fit comfortably between the bolts and will run from elbow to knuckles (plus an extra inch or two). Dap this on the non-foam side between the bolts so that you don't get shield-rash.

17) Make some straps out of belts, scrap leather, or whatever you have handy. There's not much to it, really. Just put the arm where it should go, lay the material over it, and cut out where the bolts will come through.

18) Throw down your core on your maxyor foam, outline, and cut. If you don't think the maxyor foam will be thick enough, feel free to repeat this step with an additional layer of blue foam.

19) Line up your core on the foam and guesstimate where your bolts/nuts are on the foam side. Cut out little allowances for them in the foam.

20) Dap your core and foam together. Let it dry foam side down with some weights on the core.

21) Trim your foam so that it's nice and flush with the core.

22) If you have fabric tape, measure out the circumference of your shield. Also measure the depth of the foam and core. Cut out a strip of blue foam long enough to match the circumference and as wide as the depth of the shield + 0.5". This will be the edging on your shield to keep it from coring people from time to time. One layer may be enough, but I used two.

23) Dap the strip(s) around the edge of your shield.

Aaaand unless I forgot something, your shield should be complete (except for a cover).

Re: Shields?

personally i prefer a modified version of the tear drop. it has a square top and the bottom doesn't come to apoint but rather the bottom is shapped like a rhombus. where do you practice at. I might bring one around to show you.
