Re: Important! Facts of The Continent / Help with Stories.

My character has a very strong affinity for trees. I'm working on my story and I was hoping someone could tell me all the important stuff about the Everledden tree so that I can weave it into my story. How big was it? Is it a particular type of tree, if not may I choose one?

The following post contains likely answers pertaining to the Everledden Woods and the Everledden Lifetree:

To Maetaure:

Good Question. When looking at the map of The Continent, picture the equator of our world being close to the desert city of Galadia. Now also consider that it would run through that region at approximately a 45 degree angle. If you follow the map Northeast, you'll see a couple different climate zones.

EVERLEDDEN WOODS: Now to roughly answer your question. Everledden appears to most likely be similar to Temperate Forests located in eastern North America, scientifically at least.

Everledden does, however, have certain mystical properties to it - these properties are nature oriented and simple. (I.E. - paths "unroot" themselves for travelers they favor, making the trek easier.) Use your imagination as to other simple acts the forest could do.

Here is a few scientific facts from a simple forest site online. I've added a few comments in parenthesis:

- Temperate forests

- Located in eastern North America, northeastern Asia, and western and central Europe

- Have winter and other seasons

-Temperature varies from -22°F to 86°F (In Everledden you would most likely encounter tempatures you are familiar with in Northern Ohio / Southern Michigan. Certain details are up to your imagination.)

-Rainfall occurs throughout the year, averages 30 to 60 inches per year (Just more scientific mumbo jumbo. Again use your imagination, perhaps more rain is drawn toward the Everledden Lifetree that lies directly in the hidden village of Eryndor?)

-Soil is nutrient rich

-3-4 tree species per square kilometer include such species as oak, hickory, beech, hemlock, maple, basswood, cottonwood, elm, and willow (personally I picture Everledden's trees having a slightly exaggerated size to them - making them a little taller than "real" forests. Just because the species listed above are factually in Temperate Forests doesn't mean you can't pick a reasonable tree of your liking to have small patchs of existance throughout Everledden.)

-Has both small and large mammals including squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, mountain lion, bobcat, timber wolf, fox, and black bear. (yup I picture the majority of these mammals to be within Everledden. I personally wouldn't picture seeing too many mountain lions or bobcats however. Note that the beasts of Everledden are decently peaceful, meaning a bear most likely wouldn't hunt a human just to do it, but it would of course defend itself if attacked, or found an unwelcome intruder in it's territory. Again, search deep within your imagination when pondering the animals within Everledden - perhaps a certain beast would have thicker hide than it's "real" version.)

EVERLEDDEN LIFETREE: Here are a few facts about the Lifetree:

- Is the largest tree in Everledden, rumored to be the source of all life and mystical properties within the forest.

- Located in the Inner Clearing of the hidden village of Eryndor.

- Burned and charred when Maegamarth's Black Orcs stampeded into Eryndor. The Lifetree is still alive, but leafless.

- Is the symbol that drives the Eryndor Crusade. Represents the ability of life to stand strong against the Evil of Maegamarth.

Specifically in regards to your question of what type of tree is it - Well the Everledden Lifetree hasn't been given a species, for it isn't like anything of this world. The Lifetree is simply that: A Lifetree. It's best to keep it described as such to bring out the imagination of all followers of our story - to keep everyone speculating.

Well that's all I can think of for now. I hope this has actually been helpful to you, instead of an information overload. Feel free to ask anything else.

Maetaure you like to fight in trees!!!!! Could we connect our stories somehow (I don't even have a good idea of what yours is yet but) Amras loves tree's and loves to fight in, on and around tree's! I bet that you did not know that :-P Ever since he lost his wings, climbing and controlled fally from tree's is the best comparison to flying he has, and he has grown a love and respect for tree's because of it.

The following post contains the current information regarding Ents on The Continent:

To Maetaure:

There are currently no Ents on The Continent. Perhaps a better way of putting it would be that to the people of The Continent, there is no knowledge of an Ent, and there currently is no recorded history of Ents.

Our story, however, can change with time. This particular topic is something that the Council has never talked about in depth, so it's quite possible that in the future, Ent-like creatures could make an appearance. The Continent is a huge place, and there are huge secrets that still remain to be discovered.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations regarding Ents, please feel free to write about them and email either Mithris or myself with your ideas.

Hithdor sucks. If you say Hithdor I will stab you in the jaw. I'll be the guy out in the lobby stabbing jaws, there won't be too many of us. Come up to me, say hi and I'll stab you in the jaw.

With love, Amras

Daeris or Mithris or somebody. How long would it take for this to occur.

A single person on foot travelling from Hithdor to Eredhel.

A large caravan travelling from Hithdor to Eredhel.

After the Caravan event, where did those of us travelling with Athron go, specifally which town, before we headed to Dugwaur, and how long did it take to get there?

The following post contains information that may be useful in calculating various travel times across The Continent:

To Amras:

Great question, and a very, very difficult one to answer. This topic is one that is just hard to calculate for obvious reasons, such as terrain, climate, size of party, whether they are hurried or moving slowly.

I'll start by stating a few somewhat certain travel times:

- An ordinary human walking from Duindor to Hithdor would probably take about 4 or 5 days.

- An ordinary human running from Duindor to Hithdor would probably take about 3 days.

- An ordinary human, on horseback, riding at a regular pace from Duindor to Hithdor would probably take 2 days.

- An ordinary human, on horseback, riding at an exceptionally fast pace from Duindor to Hithdor would probably take just over 1 day.

Consider that the additional time for stopping, camping, eating, or whatever is not factored in. Also consider that the travels mentioned above would be taking place on the Tradewind Freepass, a long and wide road meant for quick travel. Obviously the hills, mountains, rivers, forests, deserts, swamps, and tundras that populate The Continent would add many days to any off-road treks.

So here are my guesses to the questions you had asked:

Q1: A single person on foot travelling from Hithdor to Eredhel.

Answer A: If they were taking the Fellowship Freepass this would probably take them just under 2 weeks if they were walking and just over 1 week if they were hurried and running. Remember this is not factoring in time needed for certain necessities such as camping.

Answer B: If they were suicidal, and decided to cut through the Pale Mountains this would probably take them (now this is hard to guess of course) about 3.5 weeks walking and 2.5 weeks hurried and running. Could take a month or longer if you factor in the stopping times for the camping and climate factors.

Q2: A large caravan travelling from Hithdor to Eredhel.

Answer A: Because a caravan is only as fast as it's slowest member, I picture it moving at the same speed as an ordinary human on foot. So if they were taking the Fellowship Freepass the answers for this would be relatively the same times listed for Answer A above. Depending on what the caravan was hauling, how many people, the additional time for stopping could be either slightly longer, or much longer. A lot of possibilities here.

Answer B: If the caravan was cutting through the Pale Mountains, such as Lt. Baren's Caravan, all I can say is that this would take a LONG time. Over a month for sure if you factor in the down time for camping, cooking, and in Baren's case, time to get ambushed by a few Undead of course.

Q3: After the Caravan event, where did those of us travelling with Athron go, specifally which town, before we headed to Dugwaur, and how long did it take to get there?

You guys went to Bubar and met up with Adar's friend Enix, who was second in command of the Bluecloud. The sail time from Bubar Harbor to Dugar is something I haven't actually pondered. So this could be completely off, but I'm guessing 3 to 6 weeks sail time.

Geez, now you've got my brain in a fritz. I'm going to have Mithris review this particular post just to make sure we are on the same page as the travel times. Really there are just a TON of factors that can delay what would normally be a 1-day travel.

I guess that's why we have automobiles, subways, airplanes, and even mapquest in our mundane world.

Catch you on the flipper.
