Shield Questions

Ok with my first sword done, I'm looking to complete the set with a shield. I love the idea of a kite shield. I keep seeing the best shield foam to use is Maxyor foam. From what I have been able to understand that is foam that someone in the chapter named Maxyor supplies. I wouldn't mind getting ahold of that eventually, but for now I was wondering if using layered blue camp foam on a plywood core would be an acceptable way to make a shield or do I have to use a different type of foam?

I have also been seeing that 1/4in 5-ply Birch Plywood Underlayment is the was to go as far as the core goes. Is this the best overall core out there?

Re: Shield Questions

1. Maxyor will most likely be at the opener, seeing how his unit is hosting it and he is usually always there selling foam.

2. Blue foam on a plywood core will definitely work, it just takes a lot of blue foam. Usually you want 3-4 layers depending on what you used for the core.

3. As for the 1/4 plywood, that should work just fine for a sturdy core. Although I can not tell you if that is the best, seeing as I have made all of my shields out of just foam. I have helped other people with their own and you'll will be more than fine with a 1/4 core.

Re: Shield Questions

The 5-ply birch underlay is probably the best wood core to go with, as it is the lightest, what a lot of people refer to as tec-ply.

As for 1/4", I'm not certain if you'd want that or 1/2".

You will want to put 3 layers of blue on the face of the shield, and 4 layers on the edges.

Also, the foam that Maxyor sells is essentially a 2" thick piece of [sign in to see URL] polyethylene, which is definitely cheaper from Maxyor, but can be found ]elsewhere

What everyone said is true. Also, you can always just juse a large amount of blue foam for a shield, just as long at it doesn't "taco"(bend in on itself).

As for the kite style shield, I have one that I will have with me at the opener. If you would like, you can use mine for the event if you can't get a shield ready by then. See you then.
