Boots for my Garb

Hey guyes. Anybody know a good place to get quality boots for garb? I need something with a decent sole on it, so that it can stand up in wet weather, too. I've been looking around, and nothing is really doing it.

your price range? Most people think they're gonna find ballin' boots for like $15 and a thank you note.

Something under $200. That's my 'bug buy' for Dag for the year. Boots really help make the garb complete, so I want something quality that won't fall apart after one day in the rain.

Re: Boots for my Garb

I make them, but they are 100% authentic. So they are not "waterproof" the way rubber soles and shoes are nowadays. My seams are waxed sinew (artificial). If you go tromping in a mud puddle, your feet are getting wet. But for random encounters with moisture, its fine. Plus, you can get waterproofing spray or salve for leather that will help too.

I have pics of the stuff I make for my reenacting group on our site: http://www.GothicGermany.org There is a "gallery" link on the left navigation toolbar in the Member section. In it are pictures of my group at events. 90% of what you see, I made by hand.

Ill post a link to our leatherwork page...
http://www.rogue-artist.com/gothicgermany/crafts/leatherwork.html

I charge between $100 and $125 for the almost knee-high boots. They are all hand-made. A hammer and an awl, a needle and waxed sinew. No machines of any kind, just good old fashioned elbow grease.

They are turn-shoe style, so the soles are not super thick. I can add a second, thicker sole for an extra charge and it is glued onto the original sole. This is also authentic.

But in all honesty, if you are a city dweller you may have problems. Modern feet dont put up with what medieval feet did. If you can walk on gravel without wincing, you are more akin to medieval feet.

Some of my group put inserts into our medieval boots and shoes for arch support and to help combat the errant stone. But these boots arent designed for today's sport-like activities. I cannot say how they would hold up to be run over by 2"-thick rubber soled clod-hoppers on the field. Keep other people off your feet and you will be fine. lol

All in all, you may be more comfortable in moccasin boots and cut off the fringe. They are like $60 or some such. They arent authentic, but they are less expensive and have a rubber sole. I still wear a pair I got some 10 years ago. They need maintenance on seams and the like every couple of years, but its a good alternative.
