Throwing the High Cross (The Maeo Way).

Sir Kenny's Thoughts on the High Cross

Maeo's thoughts:

First and foremost I just want it to be known that at Armageddon '09, I beat the crap out of Kenny in duels.

On to my thoughts/suggestions.

Many fighters will suggest that NEVER throw a high cross ever. In their opinion the shot is not realistic enough, and causes you to have bad form in the long run.

I obviously disagree. Like everything there are times when you should throw it, and times when you shouldn't. I'll now give a few tips for the times when you should throw it (All the time).

Pump Fakes - My basic cross technique is pumping my sword arm shoulder towards their left shoulder making it look like I'm throwing a wrap shot. Most fighters will then try to move their shield, and counter with their own wrap. Once you see the shield move, throw the shot at their hip, side, or chest.

Hand Blocks - If you throw the high cross enough times, fighters are going to expect it. They will then throw a block and counterstrike(usually their own high cross) at the same time to try to kill you. The way I solve this is by faking the HC with my hips and arm. They then throw their shot you catch it on your swordhand and counter.

Recovery - This is the most IMPORTANT thing to learn as a fighter. The way I survive is my ability to recover. You need to be able to throw the shot and pull your hand right back to your normal position in an instant. This makes it easier to combo with such a risky shot.

Food Time. I'll add more later.

Thanks for the HC tips. Maeo is right, you don't just want to throw the High Cross, you want to set yourself up for the High cross, making the probability of it landing much higher.

Footwork - One thing I have recently been working on with my new toy the dagbat is stepping away from your opponent's shots. If you use a longer sword, you can try stepping back while counterstriking with a HC.

I think it should be noted that though Maeo says he only throws the High Cross he really does have a diverse bag-o-tricks. Always throwing the H.C. is a good way to get killed.

When thrown at the right time the H.C. can destroy, but when overly thrown the High Cross can get you crushed. That was one of my biggest problems last season. I hope that helped clarify a bit.

The High Cross is the most useful tool if used in a good fashion with the ability to throw it correctly, but that can turn on you in a heart beat if your sloppy and careless about it.

First things first If and when you throw the High Cross, Make sure that as soon as that shot lands you are pulling back for the block. 99.9999% of the time when you throw this shot, the other person counters with a High Cross of there own. You are open the most right before and right after this shot lands, so if you can pull your hand and body (shield) back into place right after it lands then your good. Block and counter attack. That's how I see using the H.C. As an opening move going down.

Now the thing I love the most about the H.C. You can use it as an opening move, middle of a combo or a finishing move.

My favorite is usually in a combo, First with a Hard shield side wrap, knowing most likely my opponent will block and throw a wrap of there own, then i combo into a H.C. and back to a quick shoulder wrap, this is one of my favorite ways to you it. Being able to move fast enough to use it in mid combo and still come back and block there counter attacks works in my favor though.

Now Footwork for the H.C. can and will also be something you need to consider, i generally do not like to stand still and throw the shot, knowing yes it does leave me open and no my legs are usually not protected at that moment i throw it. I think stepping in to there range as you start to throw the shot while side stepping at the sword side is the best way to make sure you can block and defend all at once. Make sure your shield is there to block the wrap cause your stepping in close. Throw the shot and if keep side stepping, making them have to re adjust there whole body when defending which can be a pain instead of do it while throwing shots, it leaves them more open for you to combo off of.

There are so many ways and useful things you can do to make this the best move in dagorhir or any other Dork Battle Game.

I could go on and on about ways to use it but if you can get good form down and the muscle memory for that form the High Cross can be deadly.
