Re: Would this helm be legal?

If leather does not meet the required thickness (3/16-inch), there are several ways to make it armor-grade. As per the current rules:

Solution #1: "The minimum thickness for leather armor is 3/16 inch and may be achieved by layering several pieces of thin leather." Basically, sew or rivet layers of leather until 3/16-inch total thickness is achieved. If you like the look of the helm as is, you can add the extra leather on the inside. Finding some nice soft suede might make the helm more comfortable. www.brettunsvillage.com has a good selection of relatively cheap scrap and second-rate leather, including suede; I'd highly recommend them. You'll also need some heavy waxed thread and a leather-grade needle if you're sewing; rivets, a hole punch, and a mallet if you want to use rivets.

Solution #2-3: "Studded, scaled, or brigandine armor can only be counted as armor if 2/3 of the leather is covered by metal, or the studs/rings/plates are no more than 1/2" apart." Studded leather armor is that which has a bunch of rivets all over it. So long as you meet the "2/3 coverage" and "<1/2-inch spacing" conditions, adding rivets will work fine. This might not be very comfortable for a helm, since the rivets might press into your face (especially on the nose, cheek bones, and forehead). Scaled leather armor is the same thing, except you have small metal plates instead of individual rivets. Same concerns about rule conditions and comfort apply here as well. Scales are usually attached with rivets, and need to be curved to match and non-flat parts of the armor (for the helmet, that's quite a few places, which means extra work). For both methods, you'll need rivets, a hole punch, and a mallet (plus the metal plates, if you go with scales).

Hope this helps. The helmet does look pretty neat. Hope to see it (and you) out on the field. -Caeddyn

I'm pretty sure I actually saw that helm at Ides, which would lead me to believe it would pass at an event.

Stupid question: Would it be field-legal for wearing if I did not want to use it as armor? As in, aesthetics-only. If I took a rock to the head I would still tumble down and scream in pain... I've been looking for something like this for a while.. and at that price... very tempting.

It is completely legit to wear just to look cool. Sometimes just wearing a helm will make people choose not to shoot you in the face anyway even if it isn't actually armor.

Wanted to make sure. I haven't done stuff in long enough to remember all of the rules... and I never know how things are interpreted anymore. I have enough real armor to weigh me down, as anyone who remembers me knows. =P

k so i got it and it has its good and bad sides. it has legal armor portions and non lgal portions. the facemask version is not legal by any means, also u can find nonlegal portions on the helm.....however it has many many adantages one being that the eyes are slit back providing u with peripheral vision. as a fighter that flanks, a lot, this is very valuable and something i was afraid of. also it simply looks cool and feels nice. I will be padding the inside in suede for comfort and to remove any doubts of armor legality. defintly a badassheml for the money

Reggie, I never asked, is it black or brown? The website shows pictures of both.
