Re: Story Ideas

I view Crossroads as more of an 'Alternate Universe' (holy fanfic, batman!) sort of event, where a different personality is used. I think a lot of people really enjoy the idea of playing someone other than who they usually play--like Asashi Sunfire doesn't exist in the world of Crossroads, but Bortis the Merchant does. Similarly so, the Imperial Guard and other units aren't going to fight as the IG or whatever, we're all going to fight as Random Fighter A supporting Random Group B in a sad sad world where the Hotel does not exist.

I think the idea of fleshing out the Continent in an event is a lovely one, but definitely not for Crossroads.

Though man...how boss would Hithdor look if we did do that? Or oh man, Gohithica with that giant giant flag...

Focus, focus.

Nichtmar's Dark Pools thing is kind of neat... and I defiantly like the idea of familiar characters for individuals to key to... but I'd also like something a little less evil oriented. Sorry those of you who love the seething pits of despair, I just think we should do something more Neutral oriented this time around. Good and Evil are always involved in everything... so why don't we give the kinda good and kinda evil guys a chance.

Re: Story Ideas

Alright team, I want to clarify a couple things before we move forward.

For one, I think Katsu is the Man for looking into this idea so deeply. But sadly, there's simply no way we can do such a feat for this year's event. Besides, I'm not sure The Continent is a place where territories can just be taken by force like Dark Age Europe or something. Great ideas, though, Katsu.

I really like how he described The Continent collapsing. That, however, CAN happen in our world. Like Serraphym just said, Crossroads is kinda like FAN FICTION. The Continent has no Portals, but we use it as a way of welcoming in other groups into our world.

So, regardless of what each group is named or what their motivation is... I think we just need to take a step WAY back... and decide what will keep people intrigued, imaginative, and in character... but most of all, ALWAYS give them a motivation for fighting!

...

How about this, three teams, all of which relatively neutral in nature, but still have the morals to allow them to kill, steal, and seek power for their own gain. Like maybe that's why the neutral town is on "non-violence lockdown", because they know just outside their walls there are feuding gangs/pirates/whatever that all want each others' blood. What if they simply collected ears, items, specially marked weapons, and Coin? Not just that, each team could have a sacred item that allows them their optimal rez rate... something they obviously want to hang onto... but if they have someone elses' they can rez even faster.

So these three neutralish parties are more than half of the Crossroads participants, and they all have easy-to-fall-into style categories for such a last-minute event.

We were saying that we really wanted to get away from the typical Good vs Evil idea... so what if there are three major groups... but then there are two much smaller groups. Each of them having 3-5 characters. These groups are the unquestioning, righteous peacekeepers... and the twisted, plague-spreading Necromancers.

Other than that, we need to discuss what sort of buildings and attributes are available at the neutral town.

I, for one, would love the town to always be open to thievery somehow, and also have a way to forge your weapons to do single-hand Red and whatnot. Other ideas?

I know that was a lot... but I think we're still in the brainstorm phase. Once we figure out the overall gameplay flow... THEN we can get down to the nitty gritty of storyline.

Is this taking place in The Continent again? I like the idea of more Portals opening up and bringing in more crazy characters from all over LBTL and other groups...

By the way, any other groups coming in for this event?

Re: Story Ideas

So three groups (let's call them red blue and green) are all essentially just local gangs. For the most part they are neutral, neither good nor evil, but they hate each other's guts. The gangs are in a constant competition for money, supplies, and territory. As such, open "gang wars" take place on a daily basis, with each gang trying to find any edge they can to oust the other two.

Each gang has a special item (perhaps a relic from their respective founders?) that boosts their morale greatly (faster rez) in camp. However, stealing an opposing gang's relic would create an even higher spike of morale for your gang (even faster rez).

The local town folk live under constant threat of gang violence erupting in the streets, so recently they hired guards (hithdorian aides, perhaps?) to keep the peace. So long as they keep the violence out of town, the locals don't really care if they kill each other. IE, no fighting in town, at all.

In town there is a tavern, a blacksmith, and a modest medical facility. Using coins (ill-gotten or otherwise) folks can come into town and pay for work on their weapons (single hand red? single hand double green on daggers? stronger shield?), get information on the workings of other gangs as well as any new rumors (not to mention get a bite), or get medical treatment (heal limbs, maybe by a portable limb healing bandage?).

Recently, however, a group of mysterious black cloaked figures have been creeping around the town and surrounding woods. They seem to be after something, though no one seems to know what, exactly. Rumor has it that these shady characters have been offering not only coin, but power to any willing to serve them.

The leaders of the newly appointed town guard find these cloaked fellas to be none-too-welcome, and have taken it upon themselves to rid the area of whatever sinister quest has brought them here.

===================\

So, we have red, blue, and green all sort of milling around, evil necro guys trying to manipulate people, captains of the guard trying to rid the woods of the lot of them, and some mysterious item (or perhaps portal, "dark pool", or other malignant abnormality) that eventually becomes the focus. Am I getting close?

Re: Story Ideas

Oh, and, perhaps, Eldin Yin appears at some point. Maybe he should appear halfway through the day on Saturday. He brings info on what the necromancers are after, as well as "blessing" weapons (make it able to kill the necros) for a fee, of course.

So, if that is the case, the Necromancer's can't ever die until then. The presence of the black sludge empowers them so. But once Eldin Yin appears and begins to bless the weapons of any adventurers that feel up to it,(and have the coin), they can be defeated.

Perhaps the good and bad (small groups) try to persuade people to join them, or offer quests to any of the gangs that will drop their squabble long enough to do something useful.

For instance, Captain of the Guard A approaches a member of green, and offers him 5 coin to make contact with a necromancer (have the necromancers have a specific word they communicate to the quest taker to prove they talked to him, or maybe just some item).
Or, Necromancer X offers a member of red 5 coin if he'll bring him an "ear" from one of the captains (drop an item of some kind to represent his ear). There are any number of small quests that could be done, we could even have some large ones that involve the pools. These would be optional for any players that actually -want- to get involved in a deeper story.

Those that would rather just grind out fighting can collect "ears" from opponents. Each player has one ear, representing that they are alive. When someone dies, they drop one (just one), and the victor can collect it, and the dead has to go back to base to rez (get another ear). Have them be color coded by team. So, blue guy kills red guy, and takes red ear back to blue base to be tallied by a herald. Have someone (herald or npc) carry bags of ears back to town every so often for the proper team to collect them. Or just take it back to the correct color base. Then, at the end of the day you can see which team took out the most of their opponents.

That made sense to me, not sure if it did to you guys.

This is a good idea. I like the idea of not having people hoarde ears forever so they stay 'in-play' and since you only lose 1 ear on death its not like you have to avoid combat to protect yor precious stockpile. However, I think you need to make the 'ears' do something as well if you grab up a decent number... maybe 5 or 10 lets you trade it in some back alley of the town for some potions (1) Potion of Limb Healing, (2) Potion of Rot Wood, I dunno.

Maybe turn the ears off during any 'scheduled storyline battles' (if you're doing something like that... since those are generally res. field battles... but perhaps you're not even going this route this year.

Don't forget... The main town (peaceful) can also post bounties.

"Bring me 10 goblin ears and I'll give you cloth armor."

"Bring me General X's Tabbard and I'll give you an apple pie (that heals)."

Other than that... I'd like the combo of Mith and Haldours Ideas!

Re: Story Ideas

Great Stuff, Haldour. 3 conflicting Factions.
Ears are fun. The "Back Alley" Sellers should be secret, require a little investigation to find. We could use cheap poker chips a color for each faction, so sellers could give the ears they receive to a herald, herald tallies up number of ears, then recirculates, maybe at like 8-9 Friday, tally up who's winning, and instead of giving them something you can use this to balance the game, maybe or give them something, whatever.

You could still use things like Flags/Pkgs to capture.

A territory idea like the pools idea can still work. Check this out we scatter PVC poles (funnoodled for safety) stuck in the ground, at each pole have 3 team colored flags or something on the ground, Green team comes around and sticks there flag on top, continues on their merry way. end of the day heralds for tally for some fantastical result. do it again sat.

Sprinkle some Biased and Non-Biased NPCs in the Mix. Cover it all with a quilted story and Kakow!
